I sent out a notice on the APD September 10. I also, today, sent out a
similar notice on the Crypts mailing list. The message to APD was as
follows:

___________________________________________________________________________
Jan Bastmeijer will be at the Tropical Fish Weekend Extravaganza '99,
sponsored by the North Jersey Aquarium Society, in Newark (actually
Parsippany) N.J. He has come to the US for other reasons, but he wanted to
meet some aquatic plant people, and it turned out that Neil Frank will be
at the extravaganza giving a talk Saturday. Neil Frank and I got it
arranged for a room to be available for Jan and other plant people Sunday
morning (exact time not known yet). Jan says he can give a talk on his
recent collecting trip to the Philippines, W. Malaysia and Singapore. I
figure we can have the room for several hours to talk about plants, show
slides, and get aquainted.

When I heard that Neil would be speaking at the NJAS 'extravaganza' and
that Jan was planning to come to the U.S. at the same time on other
(non-plant) business, I was determined to see if Neil and I and Jan could
get together. Jan had previously made some inquiries about meeting with
some of the plant people in the U.S. during his stay. It turned out that
Jan would be arriving in New York Saturday evening, and that the
'extravaganza' was being held only a short distance from New York City.
Jan has planned to stay overnight at the Hilton hotel where the meetings
are held and Chris Borgese, the organizer of the 'extravaganza', has
agreed to let us have a room with projection equipment Sunday morning (I
don't know exactly what time, yet) for us to meet with Jan, show slides and
get acquainted.

Jan will also be bringing a selection of his crypts which will go (mostly)
to Florida Aquatic Nursuries (FAN) and be available from FAN to us to
further Neil's plan of having a source for hard-to-get plants for AGA
members. I hope to get my hands on a few of Jan's plants to further my
plans for getting photographs of a variety of crypts grown submersed.
