This was a major faux pas we should never make again.  At a minimum, there 
should have been a team staying behind.  I would have offered, had I 
known.  I think in Dallas, the party was in the hospitality room, right? 
I remember in Houston there was some kind of private party Thursday night, 
but the program didn't state that registration was open until Friday 
morning (and wasn't the field trip more of an afternoon thing?).

I'm sure it also sucked for Peter to be there in the lobby with a large 
group of people who were off to a private party where everyone except him 
was invited.
