Re: [AGA-mcm] TAG archive CD/DVD

I think 2 side-by side.

I might send out some disks for people to beta-test. Since I'm home with Markus (no daycare on MLK Day), I've got most of the TAGs scanned already!

Here's a question: Do you think it would make sense having one "TAG page" per PDF page, or do 2 side-by-side "TAG Pages" for each PDF page?

Ah, I missed the point! I didn't know it was a

until AFTER I posted

that. It's going to have all the articles on

the CD,

isn't it?

My beanie's not up to speed yet. I'll catch up

to

formation soon....:)

No worries -- it's been quite a while since the

AGA

talked of this

archive. In fact, I beleive that was around the

time I

was calling you on

a cellphone in the middle of the 2002 banquet so

your

local party would

know the aquascaping contest was now open. So

it

probably would have been

worthwhile to recap the proposal to start.

Here's the

"latest",

incorporating yesterday's talk:

 1. This is a CD-ROM containing
 a. the "prehistorical" issues Vol 1-3, never

available

as back issues

 b. all of Neil's and Mary's issues, now

out-of-print

 c. my one-shot issue, even though it's still

for sale

(just 'cause

it closes out the black-n-white era)
 d. the out-of-print PAM's? [New Idea]
 d. Indexes and cross-references for ALL issues

of TAG

and PAM as

    of date of release

 2. Technical details on the pages themselves:

100 dpi

resamples of each

page, saved as reasonably-high quality jpegs,

with HTML

pages surrounding

them for navigation. The pages are NOT turned

back

into text, and thus

not searchable. We're relying on the indexes

for this.

 3. For issues not included in the archive

(i.e.,

everything available for

purchase!), have something on its contents page

that

says "this back-issue

is available for purchase" with a back-link to

the

website. [New Idea]

 4. Also release DVD-ROM version that also

contains 300

dpi printable PDFs

(but again, based on JPEG images, not on

original

text). [New Idea]

 5. The AGA Website already contains (today!) a

significantly scaled-down

version of the archive

(www.aquatic-gardeners.org/TAGIndex):

 a. It's integrated into the main website and

incorporates its

    style sheets, etc
 b. No actual articles hosted on the website,

just

indexes,

    covers, and tables of contents
 c. Website version will be modified to have the

TOC's

report

"This issue is available as part of our back

issue

CD-ROM"

or "This issue is available for individual

purchase" with

    appropriate linkes [New Idea]

 6. Pricing: I propose $25 for the DVD-ROM and

$20 for

the CD-ROM,

with a $5 hike for non-members or people out

of the

country. CD's

and DVD's are very cheap to ship.

Domestically,

it's about a

    buck-o-five (actually buck-o-six, but they

didn't

write a song about

that in Team America). Foreign is

$2.50-3.50, and

I have to go down

to the Post Office. But I kinda like the

idea of

giving the foreign

nonmembers a break and not penalizing them

twice.

 7. Why it's not going to happen today, and

might not

happen for another

6-12 months:

 a. Need to rescan TAG v.4-10 as originals lost

in a

hard drive

crash in 2000 before backup. Cheryl just

mailed me

a nicer

set that has the real covers for the first

year and

doesn't

have my home address pasted on the back.

 b. Program mods to implement the new ideas, and

split

out the

author index alphabetically. Also need icon

for

subject index.

 c. baby #2 is due March 1st.

So I guess I'd like to see feedback on the

modified

proposal so it can be

brought to a vote & maybe finished in the next

month.

But if it's a year

from now, at least it's official.
