His main reason though, was he didn't feel welcomed. After doing all the work promoting the aquascaping contest he felt snubbed and unwelcome by folks he didn't name. He was very willing to take on more responsibilities, but he got the impression that we didn't want him. I think there were personality problems with Carlos, but others who had done work with the AGA on various projects and conventions agreed. He also said (and was supported by others) that the AGA management is basically out of touch and only interested in doing their own thing. Scott was even described as "Stodgy", a word I hadn't heard since I read Dickens in HS. I think we have an active and willing younger crowd out there that needs to be tapped or we'll have a lot of one-time memberships.
Hi,This is something I always worry about. It is also the reason at conventions I make sure to always talk to people I don't know. Even though it is one of the few times I get to see friends on the AGA board, I try NOT to sit with them at the banquet/other times so I can meet and mingle with other people and hopefully make them feel welcome. The problem is that often things get so hectic that there is little time to do anything else other than make sure the convention is running smootly which means I don't get to talk to very many folks.
This is an area where if anyone has any suggestions on what we specifically can do to make folks feel more welcome and welcome ideas I would love to hear them. I know Erik and I have talked about this for years. (he has even less time than I at conventions and often I am the one making sure he gets food or he doesn't eat the whole day, thank you all that took care of him this last convention when I couldn't go).
It is a tough thing to juggle, but like I said, I think we all like meeting and talking with new folks, it is a time issue, if there are any ideas....please, please let us know what to do. After all we want people to feel welcome and we would love more people involved.
