Re: [AGA-mcm] Re: Convention

I guess my first question is where the heck is Regina? I don't even know what continent we're discussing.

Hi, Rick,

Nice to hear from you and about the RAS interest in hosting
an AGA convention. I have attached the Requirements and
Guidelines document.

The only reasons I can think of, off hand, that any
particular location (in or out of the USA) might not be
practical are

1) if the logistics were difficult (how's the weather in
Regina in or around November?) or

2) if cost were too high to ensure sufficient attendance
for the convention to at least break even financially.

I'm sorry to say that I am not very familiar with Regina,
and a great many other places. Perhaps that's all the more
reason to go there ;-) So I am sending a copy of this
message to the Advisory Committee of the AGA to see if they
have any thoughts about Regina as convention location. (The
Advisory Committee comprises the Board of Directors and
other AGA members who are the brains and labor behind AGA's
operation.)

You should be aware that it is very late in the year to
begin planning and preparing a convention for 2005. So you
might want to aim for 2006. I say this because, normally,
one wants to have a hotel contract in hand about 9 months
before the event. The hotel contract fixes the dates and
location and largely determines the AGA and host club's
costs as well as the registration and banquet fees to
attendees. Without the hotel contract in place, it's hard
to advertise the convention successfully. Finding the right
hotel and negotiating a contract can take days or months
depending on a wide variety of factors.

So those are some things to take into consideration. I will
get back to you within a week with any comments or
questions from the Advisory Committee.

Meanwhile, if you have other questions or comments for me
or for the AGA's Advisory Committee, let me know.

Thanks for writing,
Scott

I am an executive member of the Regina Aquarium Society.
In an effort to
bring our membership new and interesting things to do
with their tanks, and
to bring more people into the hobby, we are interested in
the possibility
of hosting a future AGA convention.

The first question I would ask is, would hold a
convention outside of the
United States, in Canada?
If you would consider this, got you forward me your bid
information?

I look forward to your correspondance.

Rick Haley
