Hiring a professional tax accountant is definitely the wisest course, 
especially since you can never get the same answer twice from the IRS (from 
much personal experience)!  The relatively small cost of hiring a pro and 
doing it right the first time is much less than the cost of trying to fix it 
later.

The rule of thumb I've always followed:  know your limitations.  If you 
can't do do it yourself - then hire a competent professional.
