Re: [AGA-mcm] AGA Discussion Forum

PS: Another reason for hosting it onsite is that I'd also like to double-gateway it with the mailing lists -- hopefully this will be doable. I also would like to be able to control our own archives rather than have it up to the whim of some arbitrary 3rd party (how many times have you seen a forum's entire archive get lost because the hosting company didn't do backups, or the group moved from one hosting company to another). Archives are very important.

Oh, and I think having Ray Cone onboard is a great idea. He might be able to do some of the technical maintanence bits that don't require physical access to the machine.

One question for Larry and Phil (and anyone else who can answer this): Given a choice of all the open-source implementations (e.g. phpBB) What software would be preferred?

I'm in the process of finding out what it will take for us to get a forum up and running. Once I've done that I will find people to staff it. I lack the knowledge to actually get it set up, but I will make the committment to the daily management/administration of a forum. Aside from begging for things, this is something I can do. Besides, it's time to put my money where my mouth is.

Find the staff first. We have the technical knowledge to set it up. I will be happy to set it up and maintain it on the AGA site. We will be able to tie in to the membership database that way. And we also won't have to pay $100-whatever per year for the hosting.
