I totally agree that if Ben feels that he CAN, he should get the first crack at tightening it up. I have just worked with enough seriously terrible beginner writers over the years to know that sometimes they need to SEE the difference it makes to an article a few times before they are able to begin to do that tightening on their own.

If Ben wants to, he is more than welcome. But since he has already worked on it for a year, it may be that he WANTS some help at this point. In which case, Cheryl and I are willing. (After ACA, sick relatives and Latvia)

I did not mean in anything I have posted to impugn the
excellent skills of the Taggers or anyone else.  I think
the world of the work you do. It's just that I think the
author should get first crack so that he can silently and
privately shed a tear or two as he excises some of his hard
wrought words for whole text's sake.
