Re: [AGA-mcm] APC

Well, we could exempt the paludarium and biotope categories just to encourage more entries in those, I suppose. We could also do something in those like give a honorable mention to the highest placing tank in those categories NOT entered by a "Masters" level entrant.

I'm not quite sure what relevance the APC contest has though. Am I missing something?

I think that's a great idea Karen. The only question is would we include Biotope Aquarium and Paludarium in the Master's Category too? That would take out 80% of the entries in those categories. A single Aquatic Garden Master's Class where volume/tan size doesn't count would be particularly good, especially with APC starting up a well organized and already well "attended" contest.

Which leads me to an idea that I brought up a couple of years ago... that we either add a "first time" class, or go in the other direction. What I'd REALLY like is if people who win a class one year, in following years be eligible only for a "masters' class" which could then be divided by size if we had enough entries over time. We could offer a bigger or more prestigious prize for this division, making it an honor to qualify/compete in it. At the same time, the "big names" wouldn't scare away the "little guys". This is similar to the sceme we developed with BAS Home Shows, for exactly the same reason. We had many members who would not compete in FW/Natural or Reef classes because a couple of people always dominated these classes. Once they were split out into their own category, there was much more first time (albeit, often one-time) participation. We also do this with the NEC Photo Contest. Those who have one a contest, or have sold photos are only eleigible in the "advanced" category.

Scott,

We're not paying APC, we're exchanging ad space. I haven't worked out the little details, but we're on the $75.00/month program. Multiplying that by four months/TAG we're actually coming out ahead.

If you go to the Aquascaping sub-forum you'll find an announcement for the AGA contest that's been stuck at the top since you posted it. With 546 views and no replies, which leads me to believe that most of those views aren't multiples by the same user, that's a fair bit of exposure for a thread.

http://www.aquaticplantcentral.com/forumapc/forumdisplay.php?f=14

It's one of those up near the top.

By this time, with five years under out belts most people know when the contest is and talk regularly about entering "The AGA". I still feel the reason we don't get more participation is the intimidation/why bother? factor. "Luis, Oliver Knott, Wayne Sham, Eric Cheng, Tony Gomez and all the other big winners are going to enter, why should I bother? I can't win." I still hear a lot of "My tank isn't good enough/isn't ready [to compete with the above]."

$.02
Phil
