While I was in Latvia, at some of the restaurants, when they served you 
bread, they served little balls of butter, and then also little balls of a 
brown spread called (this probably isn't the way it is spelled, but this is 
what it sounded like) "Can-yipps".  It tasted good, a little peanut-buttery, 
and I was told that it was made from the seeds of some plant, though the 
plant name didn't mean anything to me either. (being the Latvian version).

Then we went out one night with a friend who works for the the Latvian 
government in some capacity related to the EU.  He did his Masters in the 
U.S. and his doctorate in Canada, so his English is very good.  I tried once 
more to get to the bottom of what this plant was.  He sort of smirked and 
then told me that it is made from the seeds of the Marajuana plant!  Turns 
out that this has been a centuries old delicacy in the Baltic region, long 
before anyone tried to smoke the stuff and found out you could get high in 
the process.  They grew it for fiber and for the seeds.
