Wow, David, potatoes and horse fat -- a whinnieing combination. When MacDs stopped using lard about a decade ago, because of all the fuss about it, they switched to vegetable "shortening" with beef flavoring added to try to recapture animal fat taste -- after all, the secret to all fast food is the fat content, the beefier the better it sells. What's this to do with aquatic plants? Well, kelp beds are harvested for the lecithin, a kind of vegetable fat that's good for high temperature cooking. So it's regularly harvested by humans right from the sea. Unfortunately, it makes humans sweat, which is just one way the nature gets even. How can something that makes our bellies longer be called "shortening?" Maybe it's the effect on our lifespans. ;-) Recommended reading for anyone that want to go on a diet: _Fast Food Nation_. It's bound to bridle one's enthusiasm for fried stuff. sh --- David Lass <davidlass@villasunscape.com> wrote: > The secret to European frittes is -- I am told -- that > they are cooked in > horse fat.
