Re: [AGA-mcm] contest chai job description -elections

We originally applied under 501c3 and the IRs suggested that we refile under 501 c7 -- message between the lines we'd have a better chance applying under 501 c7. When Itook over as Treasurer, we reapplied under 501c7 and were advised by the IRS person handling our case to ask the IRS to consider us under 501c4. The Board agreed and we did so. The Irs recognized aga AS Tax-exempt under 501c4, including retroactive recognition (or forgiveness if you want to call it that) back to the date of AGA'sincorporation -- AGA never filed any annual tax forms witht he IRS, which Mary knew was against the rules. So the forgiveness was crucial, it was worth tens of thousands of dollars in back taxes, penalties and interest.

>If we  reincorporate we would definitely have to reapply with the IRS to be recognized as tax-exempt. Btw, AGA is not recognized 501c3, but under 501 c4, not that that makes a terrific diff in this matter.<

I don't think there is any need to reincorporate!  I was just worried that MA was possibly one of the punitive anti-corporation states.

It's interesting, we're a (c) (4), the ACA is a (c) (3), and the ALA is a (c) (7)!  Doesn't have a thing to do with anything, but I thought it was interesting...
