It's very subtle.  As an admin, I'm being pretty brutal on anyone who 
shows up to the forum (possibly registering right before posting), leaves 
an essentially pointless post on an existing topic (especially an old one) 
that has a link to an unrelated business in their signature.  If the reply 
looks legit but moronic, like actually mentions aquatic plants, I go into 
their profile and remove the signature.  I suppose if any of those 
actually came back and complained, I would let them put the signature 
back.  But they don't come back.

One nice thing about having several mods is that we get the digest sent at 
different times a day, so we effectively have different "shifts" in which 
to banish pointless global posts.  All mods have the permission to 
moderate posts in any forum (I think).  Bailin, you are already a global 
moderator, as is Phil.  Would you like to take over "Fertilizers"?
