Sure. I'd also consider plain gravel (not the epoxy-coated stuff, which I personally don't care for); plain gravel with some laterite; coarse sand (about 3mm); a hardened clay gravel or other highly porous gravel; any of the above with or without peat or other organic additives. Once the tank has been up and running for a while, the accumulation of detritus and the use of trace mix will matter more than whatever supplements you use.
