My point wasn't that the AGA issue isn't relevent -- if
that's how some are reading it -- but that it's a reason
likely to engender ill will. And that we had enough reasons
without mentioning that one.

I thought it had more to do with what the person's done for
the hobby. Merril a lot; this one, not so much. If someone
wanted to establish an AGA award for excellence in
something in honor of Merril, and they could put up the
money -- I'd go for that if I had to do all the work
myself.

And I think honoring non-AGA members does make some sense.
Given the purpose of the AGA, membership isn't necessarily
a criteria for recognition. While, I don't think Vicki
deserves special recognition by AGA, others might think she
does and consider the Not-AGA reason as somewhat parochial
given the goals of the AGA. I can easily imagine someone
saying, "AHA's have recognized non-AGA folks before, but
not with something as big as a formal prize. So it's a
matter of degree only?" It's hard to stand on a principle
and have it support you if it's already been bent. And I
fear that that is how this will appear to some of the folks
interested in Vicki -- and I know some of these folks spend
a lot of time on AB and other forums.
