Once again, my only experience with a national club was with the African Violet Society of America (AVSA). It is a much larger org than AGA, and they have been putting on national conventions since when I was thin and had hair -- actually, before both. AVSA also is much more solvent than AGA is, and could afford to take any risks associated with a convention, although they always made lots of money for AVSA. The way they handled things was that : 1) There was a standing committee of the national org. just for the annual convention. Within that committee there were subcommittees on things like the show, the auction, speakers, tours, hotel etc. 2) Locations for each year were decided at least 3 years in advance. To be on the slate a local club had to appoint their own chairs of each subcommittee. 3) The subcommittee chairs for next year's convention shadowed their counterparts at the current year convention. 4) Speakers were decided upon by the national committee -- by the chair of speakers. It seems to me that part of the problems we are having are tied up in the fact that the convention, which started out being an AGA event when it was in Tenn, has pretty much become an event done by a local club/group with the sanction (Scott -- this time it is the approval) of AGA. In AVSA the local club was the "host" of the AVSA convention and the national called the shots -- I sorta get the feeling that AGA was the guest of the local club. What also seems to have happened de facto is that the BOD is serving as a convention committee of the whole. The process is seeming to get things done, but I'm not at all sure it is the best way to do it, and it seems to go along with law and sausages as being things that if you enjoy them you shouold not see them made. Sorry for having comments about the problem (at least what I see is the problem) and not really having any solution. I thought that we had gotten Valerie Grove to be the chair of the committee, but I guess I was mistaken. I don't really know how things were handled, since I was pretty much out of it for the months of April through June after my fall. Assuming we are not going to constitute a convention committee, on the Amano thing I think we should ask Karen to see if he would come, and we absolutely need Tomoko to translate. Sorry for the babbling -- I'm gonna go play in the snow. David ----- Original Message ----- From: "S.
