Fwiw, at no small increase in expense, here at the PA, for
the field we switched to a ruggedized version of IBM
laptops. (Our PC hardware contrct is with IBM.) These are
built much sturdier than the standard models and our need
for repairs has dropped signiificantly.

But nothing will prevent the semiconductor failure that's
built into the component but not detected by the
manufacturer's quality control. And, totally lacking
statistics, I think this is the most common cause for a
printed circuit board failure -- the same for computers and
hifi equipment.
