Fwiw, at no small increase in expense, here at the PA, for the field we switched to a ruggedized version of IBM laptops. (Our PC hardware contrct is with IBM.) These are built much sturdier than the standard models and our need for repairs has dropped signiificantly. There's some press release (i.e., ad) info here: http://www.technewsworld.com/perl/story/31777.html But nothing will prevent the semiconductor failure that's built into the component but not detected by the manufacturer's quality control.
