I think it's a great idea in general. I think that if you announce things as they come up, that's fine, no matter how frequent or infrequent. If it's "reminder" type stuff, I agree with Erik, that more than once a month or so, and it would get annoying for people. Kept to that level, it's probably actually better on the "general" list, so people don't tune it out.
