[AGA-sc] Re: AGA forum, convention, various
Words of wisdom from our own Peter Pan. He had e-mailed me last night
asking to be allowed on the forum, etc. I took the opportunity to ask him
about some stuff...
Reading between the lines, sounds like Skidmore is normally a nice guy?
But there's that whole bit about SFBAAPS being that fun-loving
disfunctional family.
I didn't reply to most of his points, but that bit about keeping in mind
the local club working for free deserved one...I said the local club
should also keep in mind that the AGA folks are working for free year-in,
year-out while the local club at least gets to go back to being a quiet
local club after the convention's over.

Subject: Re: AGA forum
Unfortunately, one Michael Skidmore, the AGA SFBAAPS rep, let the cat
out of the bag a month early.
He did say it was hush hush and it was quickly suggested not to go mess
with the AGA forum till it was ready. And I said it was about time the AGA
did this rather than sticking with the APD/Usenet etc. I had to get a damn
forum just to produce my own thing, much to my attepts to avoid it.
After sleeping through 6 months of e-mail on the Advisory Committee
e-mail list, he interpreted a call for testers as "spread the word far
and wide" and I had to password-protect the site until it's ready for
public consumption. Grr.
He mentioned all that. Seems like folks took upon themselves to try and
post etc. I guess that finally caught his attention for some reason,
sometimes that attention getter happens with me. Typically about some hair
brained plant issue.
Speaking of which, have you had any dealings with him?
Yep, several, all better than yours:-)
I thought he was Illka at first, a Fin that was active a while
ago.
He's recently left a rather nasty note in response to my request for
SFBAAPS to get off their butts and take the 2006 bid seriously or we'll
move on immediately (but in a nice way). His reply was vitriolic, along
the same lines as what I've seen spewed forth by Gomberg, Kropp earlier
this year on the infamous "conheads" list of which I think you're still
a member. "SFBAAPS doesn't need to make the AGA board 'feel good'. We
are submitting a bid. You will get the bid November 9. It will be
professional and detailed. The AGA can accept or reject it."
Well, everyone is doing this for free do keep that in mind. Both need
reminded iof that and the fun that will happen with the work.
Some still wear their work I'm getting paid shoes when working for free
and Gomberg, well, it's just a nut and scheming in the middle. Jeff is an
odd person, we enjoy messing with eachother. We know we are all different
but somehow the whole group works very well together and always has for
quite sometime.
The point I'm making is that we all have a common goal and it's to help
new folks in the hobby. The Event is still about that and showcasing the
clubs, people that are doing things.
I have had a few choices lately this year along these same lines and I
made the right choice. I could have easily chosen to be defensive,
sensitive and quit dealing with a couple of clubs and said screw it. I was
within my right and had similar things and attituded sent my way........
or I could see through that difference and laugh at it. Fortnutely for
those most interested in plants, I chose path B. Everyone would be bummed
if the groups and me did not work this out.
I got plenty of thanks when I came and left. I always do and have.I've
never seen nasty intent. We do this for free.
Jim, the official organizer, seems like a very nice guy, but I
can't help
but wonder if the team will be mostly Jims or mostly these
sorts of
people.
There are many many new people in the SFBAAPS club, I think me bugging
people on the forums rounded up quite a few the last 2 or so years. Jim is
very nice. They all are and very giving of time, weeds, and help.
On line talk is quite another matter.
Speaking of which, are you still involved in SFBAAPS' bid? They've got
you listed as speaker coordinator, but I remember you questioning your
involvement last time we e-mailed.
No, I knew what was and was not going to work, there was a lot
of time pressure last year, they have nailed down the hotel for
under 100$, so.......with that in the bag, things should go
forward fairly well now.
I guess I'm the speaker dude.
I have several folks asked already and they have accepted.
I thought I was just the field trip person?
Well, we will talk soon about it and I'll see what folks think.
