Subject: [AGA-sc] Motion for Award of Aquascaping prizes

The following you already know but just as a reminder:

We intended to award prizes this year to some or all Aquascaping Contest winners. We sought some sponsorship from clubs and vendors, generally in the form of goods. We received goods for 1st place winners plus a few odds and ends, *and* Kim (AHS) offered to give $250 to Best of Show. All of the winners this year are non-USA residents, so shipping costs would be high relative to the value of the goods. We discussed gift certificates as an alternative to sending goods but the receipt of goods purchased with gift certificates could present the same onerous shipping costs to
   winners.
The goods can be sold eventually at club auctions for cash.
The contest ended about 2 months ago and we haven't sent out prizes yet.

The simplest way to deal with this is, I believe, for the Treasurer to mail checks to the winners. Checks are 2nd only to cash as the most widely accept gift certificates in the world. And checks mail much more safely than cash.

I move the that the Board approve the following:

that the Treasurer, as soon as possible, send awards by check to the winners according to the following table and that the goods received from sponsors be sold when it is practical and convenient to do so and the funds credited to the AGA general account as offsets for Aquascaping contest contest costs.

                                                     Place
Categories 1st 2nd 3rd Best of Show Small $100 $50 $25 $250 (paid by Bryant)
Medium 100 50 25
Large 100 50 25
XLarge 100 50 25
Biotope 100 50 25
Paludarium 100 50 25
_______________ _______________ _______________ _______________ Total
Totals $600 $300 $150 $250 $1,300

I believe the amounts are reasonable and certainly affordable. Since we didn't loudly spell out that only some winners would get prizes, I think it would be goodwill to award prizes to all winners, even third place winners, although the amounts are proportionately small. Put another way, I wouldn't risk the illwill jsut to save 150 bucks ;-)

Subject the motion being seconded, I vote yes.
