Subject: [AGA-sc] opinions on speakers for convention?

Larry is moving forward quite well with the hotel contract.

-- we are hoping to have a deal essentially wrapped up next week. Still fine
tweaking a few terms strategically -- Larry's ahd some really good ideas. I
think the Jean (hotel rep) has heard the worst and nothing has made her feint
but she doesn't have a written doc yet. So the hotel hasn't seen the fine print
and the tweaking. Stay tuned.

Re speakers generally. I share your concerns but know fewer folks than you.
Alas, knowing a subject and being able to teach or speak about it are very diff
talents. You all have painful examples that come to mind. But I wonder if
Mosses would serve as major draw? I.e., is the topic a headliner or a front act?

Mosses - Professor Tan

-- Does Claus or Christel know or has either heard him?

Australian Native Plants - Dave Wilson

--- Dunno Dave Wilson but this reminds me, Brian Wilson can write music but
hearing him speak aobut it is just plain painful.

Photography - Jay Luto
live demo with a tank, done
by someone who's photographed aquascapes for pro or Amano contest

-- Live demo with the digitals shown projected on screen, (tell me then show
me) now that would be something!
-- I would rather hear what Karen or Senske has to say about photog than Jay.
Jay is dedicated to the craft but I think others could be more interesting and
maybe have more experience.

Freshwater Shrimps/Inverts

-- If we have shrimp speaker, maybe we should sell shrimp again? or What if we
put 5 in everyone's goody bag? Cost a lot but a darn sight better than another
bottle of Stress Slime.

Should I call up Tom Barr and ask him for his counter-proposal list?

-- I agree that he could be a good source for some suggestions but we would
*have* to be sure we didn't rely on him to recruit the spreaker. Otherwise the
risk is too great. After all Tom is/was the Speaker Chair already. Odd calling
the Speaker Chair and asking if he wants to come up with names. It would have
to be clear we just want names/contacts, not Tom doing the recruiting.

My most important comment about speakers, I ahve saved for last: I STILL WANT
DOROTHY!
