There's a lot to be sad about. But also things to be happy about.
I remember when I was invited to the Board, Karen asked if I wanted to "come an
play."
It's hard work sometimes, but for the most part, it should be interesting and
fun and not chronically adversely affect more important things in life. That
won't always be the case all the time for all folks. When it's not, it's less
fun for everyone.
When Jack Welsh took over GE, he handed down a mission: be number one or two in
every endeavor. In the others, either become number one or two quickly or drop
it.
I don't want to stretch the application to far, but the basic point is that fit
between resources and uses must be adjusted in whichever direction ensures no
bad fits. Our resources do not fit our endeavors very well right now.
I don't think anyone else could do for AGA what you do for AGA. Phil brought
particular zeal and skill to task he was able to undertake. And I can't imagine
anyone else doing as much to reshape TAG so quickly into what it is today. But
we need to focus on what we can do without overtaxing the folks that are doing
it. Getting more workers will be great -- certainly preferable to dropping
endeavors. But the core thing, I believe, is to do what we can do well, with
the resources we can muster.
For example, perhaps we shouldn't count on doing a convention in 2007. Perhaps
we should look for staffing. Then, provided adequate staffing looked very
likely, undertake a convention. Maybe we should even post the headhunt that way
-- "the AGA intends to produce a convention next year provided that . . . .if
interested, contact. . .

For some reason, this made me want to resign as president. Stuff like
this and the convention have been keeping me up at night again & I just
can't deal with this level of stress.
Well, I'm giving it one more best shot -- I posted a job query on the
forum, and maybe some folks will respond & we can salvage the club. But
I'm feeling pretty pessimistic today.
