Would Karen have any suggestions ?
Would we want to consider Amano again ?

Do you have any opinion on alternate speakers, Jim?

Who's not interested in substrate? And there's a whole cult in the hobby
that seeks the better substrate -- whther these folks will pay for a
convention, I don't know, but I know topic gets airplay on forums.

November too cold? Too hot? How would you like to spend part of it in San
Francisco? Cable cars, Lombard St., Chinatown -- and a simply huge
aquatic plant auction.
The 2006 Aquatic Gardeners Association Convention will be November 10-12
at the Sheraton Gateway Hotel -- San Francisco International Airport.
Details will be posted soon at http://www.aquatic-gardeners.org/

Both speak good enough English that I correspond with them regularly.
They
both WRITE better English than Claus does, so I expect that their spoke
English is also quite understandable. Ole is a good photographer, and a
university professor, so I'm sure he can lecture. Troels has the back up
of
all of Tropica, so I am also sure that, with Claus' help, even if he
doesn't
have his own pictures, he can get together what he needs for a good
presentation.
Ole would probably speak more on plants in the wild, while Troels is
doing
R&D at Tropica now, and I think could have a very different type of
presentation than some we've had.
Here is an excerpt from Troels' first letter to me, when Claus first
introduced us:
"During my study in Biology and following Ph.D I have been working with
experimentally studies on aquatic plants for several years - however,
these
studies has been on species in lakes and at field conditions. The studies
has been focussing on the plant response to changing environmental
conditions - e.g. CO2, nutrients and light - and how these parameters
interact on the uptake of nutrients and growth in the plants.
Furthermore, I
have also studied the impact of the parameters on plant vegetated
ecosystem
(for example the importance of decrecing light for the release of
nutrient
from the sediment/plants to the water resulting in incresing growth of
algae
in the water column). Unfortunately, aquariums are a new world for me,
but a
very exiting challenge which I look forward to meet!
My first assignment will focus on development of a bottom material to
aquarium tanks - a material which can retain and supply with nutrients
with
a rate that can support the growth of the plants without releasing more
than
necessary to the water column. Hopefully, the material can also
contribute
to the structure and biological processes in the bottom of the tank. The
following assignments will focus on nutrient pills and dissolved nutrient
stocks."
If we are seriously interested in one of them, I can ask Claus for a
recommendation. But I didn't want to bother Claus with it earlier, as it
looked like the crew kind of had their minds set on either Professor Tan
and/or Dave Wilson.

Karen,
Have you heard either or do you have any information
on their presentation skills and possible
presentations? Ole does seem to be the more well
known.

Erik,
Wow, what a way to make a person feel honoured and
proud. The people in
the AGA and SFBAPS have been my guide in setting
up planted aquaria and
have
helped in ways they could never know.
I left the public Aquarium a few years ago and
have been struggling
setting
up a small aquatic plant business in the real
world for a while now.
Unfortunately it is at a stage where I can only
get away for short time,
one
or two days at most. Thanks for the very kind
offer however I must say
no.
My wife Robyn and I plan to take a trip to the US
in a few years time and
I
hope to visit to the public aquaria over there at
Monterey Bay and
Baltimore. I want to visit the Australian
exhibit at Baltimore as I
helped
John Seyjagat the Curator access Australian fish,
reptiles and plants for
the exhibit.
The future trip will coincide with the Aquatic
Gardeners Association
Convention where ever it is at that time.
Once again thanks for the invitation and generous
offer.
Cheers
Dave

Hello Dave,
The AGA and San Francisco Bay Area Aquatic Plant
Society have been
working
for a while to organize the 2006 convention this
November, and as of
today
we've finally secured a hotel and date. Your
name was actually at the
top
of the list by the SFBAAPS folks, and I concur.
But I wanted to wait
until that point before formally inviting you to
speak there.
I can give some details right now if that helps:
It will be held the
weekend of November 11th, talks will be on
Saturday, and there may be a
field trip on Friday. If you have a second
presentation (especially if
it's a lighter or shorter one), we would love to
have you be our banquet
speaker as well. There are four other speakers,
but as the "guest
speaker", the convention will pay your airfare,
hotel and banquet.
Would you be interested? Any questions I could
answer?
