Jim is asking about Christel again. Seems to me she just spoke at NEC last year; we'd be better off getting one of Karen's suggestions. Any thoughts from you guys?-- Erik Olson erik at thekrib dot com ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Thu, 23 Mar 2006 14:19:25 -0500 From: jiml1029@aim.com To: erik@thekrib.com Subject: Re: [AGA-sc] No Dave Wilson (fwd) Erik,I read Karens suggestions, and I think it might be a good opportunity to introduce some new blood to the key presenters in this area. I have the feeling that the demand for speakers in the aquatic plant arena will continue. We exhausted my speaker list (Prof Tan, Claus, Dave), but I did have one more thought. Would it be reasonable to try for Kasselmann again. I thought her recent articles in TAG on her Brazil trip were about the best I've seen on field expeditions that I've seen in a while. She did bring out another book here in the US this past year, which had more of an Aquarium focus. She is a "name" in the hobby.Just a thought, Jim. -----Original Message----- From: Erik Olson <erik@thekrib.com> To: jiml1029@aim.com Sent: Wed, 22 Mar 2006 14:27:57 -0800 (PST) Subject: Re: [AGA-sc] No Dave Wilson (fwd)Karen definitely has some ideas (see the message thread below). Theyboth WRITE better English than Claus does, so I expect that their spoke English is also quite understandable. Ole is a good photographer, and auniversity professor, so I'm sure he can lecture. Troels has the back up of all of Tropica, so I am also sure that, with Claus' help, even if he doesn'thave his own pictures, he can get together what he needs for a good presentation.Ole would probably speak more on plants in the wild, while Troels is doingR&D at Tropica now, and I think could have a very different type of presentation than some we've had. Here is an excerpt from Troels' first letter to me, when Claus first introduced us: "During my study in Biology and following Ph.D I have been working withexperimentally studies on aquatic plants for several years - however, thesestudies has been on species in lakes and at field conditions. The studies has been focussing on the plant response to changing environmental conditions - e.g. CO2, nutrients and light - and how these parametersinteract on the uptake of nutrients and growth in the plants. Furthermore, I have also studied the impact of the parameters on plant vegetated ecosystem (for example the importance of decrecing light for the release of nutrient from the sediment/plants to the water resulting in incresing growth of algae in the water column). Unfortunately, aquariums are a new world for me, but avery exiting challenge which I look forward to meet! My first assignment will focus on development of a bottom material toaquarium tanks - a material which can retain and supply with nutrients with a rate that can support the growth of the plants without releasing more than necessary to the water column. Hopefully, the material can also contributeto the structure and biological processes in the bottom of the tank. The following assignments will focus on nutrient pills and dissolved nutrient stocks." If we are seriously interested in one of them, I can ask Claus for a recommendation. But I didn't want to bother Claus with it earlier, as it looked like the crew kind of had their minds set on either Professor Tan and/or Dave Wilson. The people inthe AGA and SFBAPS have been my guide in settingup planted aquaria andhave helped in ways they could never know. I left the public Aquarium a few years ago andhave been strugglingsetting up a small aquatic plant business in the realworld for a while now.Unfortunately it is at a stage where I can onlyget away for short time, one or two days at most. Thanks for the very kindoffer however I must sayno. My wife Robyn and I plan to take a trip to the USin a few years time andI hope to visit to the public aquaria over there atMonterey Bay andBaltimore. I want to visit the Australianexhibit at Baltimore as Ihelped John Seyjagat the Curator access Australian fish, reptiles and plants forthe exhibit. If you have a secondpresentation (especially ifit's a lighter or shorter one), we would love tohave you be our banquetspeaker as well. There are four other speakers, but as the "guestspeaker", the convention will pay your airfare, hotel and banquet.Would you be interested?
