My experience is that you end up with few people voting because they just don't know the candidates. At the same time, you can get a militant (and usually difficult) few who can drum up enough votes among their cronies to get on the board, then make life difficult enough for the real core working group that they all quit in disgust. I've seen it too many times in too many hobby organizations. I would be willing to entertain the possibility of elections from the MC, though, and that is a larger group. We could even invite people onto the MC on a volunteer and you're in basis.
