Tim,
I mix straight tap water back to my R/O  (sounds silly, doesn't it?)
to about 86ppm of TDS.
Here in Milwaukee, on a good water day, that's about a 50/50 ratio.
THEN I'll de-chlorinate if I'm going to use it right away.
In more extreme cases (some West Africans) I've mixed to 40ppm which is
about a 3 to 1 ratio of R/O to tap.

I've never known if this was a scientifically solid plan, but I'm pleased
with the results.
