For all of you American Cichlid Association members out there, there is a very nice article by Dr. Uwe Römer in the April 2002 issue of the Buntbarsche Bulletin. Sadly, it propagates the erroneous identification of the fish in question. To make it accurate, cross out any reference to A. sp. Nanay and replace it with A. sp. Parrot/Papagei. A. sp. Nanay was, when Römer first introduced it, and still is a totally different species altogether. The true A. sp. Nanay, as introduced commercially by Julio Melgar in 1998, is more closely related to A. cruzi (it is in the cruzi species-complex) than to A. sp. Pebas. This mix up was first reported & explained by Koslowski in the January 2000 issue of DATZ & should have been cleared up by now. Sadly it is now rearing its ugly head in the English & Spanish language literature.
