Hi you guys. We have for sure all had to deal with this hydra stuff. If you haven't then knock on 27 things that are wood. Over the years there have been some POWERFUL people tell us that they simply CAN'T come from the bbrine shrimp because of this reason or that reason.......these guys, some of them, have really nifty educational backgrounds and have no real reason to put forth a theory that they don't believe. Having said that let's talk about having HYDRA! For sure you can get it from plants......it can come in on plants and gravel and anything that provides a surface for the HYDRA to hang onto. Having said that, there is another way that the hydra can get into your tanks.........with fish. Yep boy.........when a person is catching a fish in a tank that has hydra in it there is a good chance that the hydra is going to be knocked loose and get in the bag you are taking home..............bingo..........you have hydra. You might say..........from one little hydra.......sure.........it takes quite a while to get to the point that an outbreak shows but isn't that the point...........we think and think and think and we can't remember for the life of us where the hydra could have come from. That's because maybe it has been several weeks or a month or 2 since you added anything new to your tank and then presto there it is...............................before you po-poo this think for quite a while about the start of hydra in your tank. Bbrine shrimp contains HYDRA..................???????..........I really don't think so. Folks there are very few hobbyist that use more brine shrimp more than me and my partner Jim Cormier. I have 40+ tanks at my house ....................Jim has some 30+ tanks at his house......................between the two of us we have some 120 tanks at the shop. Between the two of us we use ohhhhhhhhhh......me 1-1 1/2 can a month to month and a half............Jim uses 1/2 can a month................the shop uses at least 1 can a month........................folks.....that's almost 3 cans a month.............possibly a slight exaggeration depending on fry available but for sure make that between 2-3 cans a month. Jim has NEVER had hydra in 25 years of keeping fish he says.............the shop has never in 2 1/2 years of operating had any hydra.........I have had it several times in the last 4-5 years.....................the bBrine shrimp we use is always from the same place........we get it from the co-op down here and he takes a can I take a can and the shop gets a can.................likewise from Brine Shrimp Direct.........................the only difference is that I am pretty cavalier about bringing in live foods.......daphnia starts etc. into my room.............people always good and proper aquarists are trading me fish, they may bring it in.........and I like plants in my apisto tanks and will buy plants.................you go figure...................those odds tell me they are not from the bbrine shrimp! .............as far as getting rid of the HYDRA..........I've used it all including the battery thing..........yep I did, and it worked............but the best and easiest form of treatment is the Fluke Tabs...............they work.............I have never had them hurt any of my fry at 1 1/4 strength......in a 20 gallon I will put 3 tabs........you find your level of tolerance. The hydra are gone in 12-24 hours and usually if I retreat in 2-3 days (to catch the eggs that hatch) the hydra is gone..............but it will show up in another tank because of nets and stuff and stuff that go from tank to tank.........even water drops that MIGHT contain a hydra of two................ Guys.....I've talked too long............hope this helps the HYDRA thing..............I don't not mean to cause any arguments ......just help out the situation..........you guys have a good day.......................since we are already into the week that means the week end is getting here fast.....;-) Mike Mike Jacobs J&M Tropicals Wild Peruvian Imports...Plus http://www.southernapistos.com ----- Original Message ----- From: <WnyZman@aol.com> To: <apisto@listbox.com> Sent: Tuesday, August 20, 2002 3:41 PM Subject: Re: Fluke tabs > > Tomoko, > If I had your problem, I would make sure I had enough Java moss in the > tank for the fry and stop feeding them BBS for a few days and add the Fluke > Tabs then.
