I have seen some awfully weird things seemingly spontaneously generate
in water... of course, they don't really get there that way, but the
modes of transmission are often beyond detection. I don't see
terrestrial leaves as a likelier source of introduction than a dust mote
settling out of the air.
If I was you, I'd be seeing if anyone likes to eat them, and - if so -
how hard it is to make more of them! Baby apistos and small mouthed
dwarves like Taeniacara tend to love stuff like that...
