Re: beefheart recipe

Hi Mike ,all,
I mentioned in the recipe to clean the beefheart thoroughly and to make sure to remove all the fat and muscle tissue. The meat of the heart itself is very lean.
I've been feeding this recipe to my Discus and other fish for about a year now without any visible problems. However ,make sure that the pieces are small enough for your DC's when you feed them the food.
My DC's get this food at least twice a week.
It's the staple diet in my Discus growout and Discus community tank(Tetras,DC's and Dwarf Cories). You could leave the beefheart out of the recipe and substitute with Krill or Shrimp. That's entirely up to you. I even tried Salmon scraps as a beefheart substitute before.
Peter Thode of Gwynnbrook farms uses Turkey Hearts instead of Beefheart for his Discus food .
Just my 2 euro cents.
Take care
Max

Arild,

The problem with beef heart is not really the muscle, but the fat. I've been
told that mammal fat is not easily digested by fish. It is left over &
excreted. At normal aquarium temperatures (<85ºF/29ºC) it can become too firm
in a fish's intestinal tract & create blockages. Whether this is true or not,
it seems a little is OK, but a lot creates problems.
