Wash and 30 secs microwave. When I just tossed them in without the microwave stage, some small white worms with a brown head would show up. They were not tasty at all since most of the fish picking those would imediatly spit them out. I got the impression I lost a few very hungry juvenile barbs because of some kind of toxine in those worms.

If you dont feel safe, use some for a couple of weeks in an tank with unexpensive fish. Once you get confident, go for it. Be VERY generous in the first water changes if you dislike the "tea colour".

    I toss mine directly into the tank, make sure there is no mold
though.  Some microwave or boil them to kill any nasties.
