Doubling length, doubling width and doubling depth of the body increases body volume (and body mass) by a factor of eight (2x2x2=8) with a tremendous increase in food requirement. Also, the growth curve would probably be steeper for a 1/2" fry compared to a 1/4" fry. This means that the 'natural' growth rate would be higher for 1/2" fry with a resulting increase in nutritional needs. I certainly have underestimated the food requirements of many species as the fry grow.
