Hi, I just joined the list and have some thoughts on fry raising with the parents and without. I normally pull the eggs from the parents as soon as I notice a spawn and hatch in a drum bowl, moving swimming fry to bare 10's. I feed once a day bbs enough so there is a lot of shrimp left after an hour. I do change 30-50% of the water 1-3 to times a week depending on the numbers of fry. I have had many Apisto's spawning by 3-4 months but T. candidi spawned at 8 weeks post freeswiming. When I didn't need fry and left them with the parents, the fry did grow a little faster which I attribute to having lots of things to browse on all day long in the planted and gravelled spawning tanks versus bare 10's. With west Africans, I can usuallay get as good or better growth away from the parents. Another note, when I pull eggs from the parents, I usually get little fighting, but when I pull fry I will get many more fights. Case in point, I just pulled fry from A. pertensis and the female killed both males and three other females, but I do have 20 fry coming up. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is the apistogramma mailing list, apisto@majordomo.pobox.com.
