Steve, This question was answered several times in the past year. I'm surprised that no one else on the list has mentioned it. Römer & Beisenherz (1995 & 1996) undertook an exhaustive statistical study on the environmental causes of sex ratio variations in Apistogramma, using hundreds of spawning of 37 different species of Apistogramma plus two non-apisto control species. I can't go into all their controls here, but there findings show that temperature during the first 30-40 days from spawning is the primary factor affecting sex ratios. pH was important in only a few, mostly black water, species.
