new driftwood

I just picked up some new pieces of driftwood from the beaches on the
coast last weekend, and I was wondering what the best way to treat it
would be.  It was washed ashore from the Pacific side of Vancouver
Island, so I don't think the usual high saline bath for a few weeks
would get ride of all the nasties.  I was thinking of bleaching it, but
I don't want to lose the color, and the bleach would be hard to rinse
out.

 Any thoughts?
