De-nitrator project - opinions

I have a 26 gallon tank that houses the following cichlids:
2 crenicara punctulata
2 Papiliochromis altispinosa
1 Laetacara curviceps
1 "cupid" (Biotodoma)

Other:
3 corys, 1 pleco, 1 otto flexillus, 3 hatchets

I like to feed twice a day and my problem is nitrates. I'd have to
regenerate my nitrate resin too often and do water changes too often.
I'd like to do water changes more, but it seems to spook and stress the
fish so that I cringe at the thought. I have an Eheim "dummy" canister
full of SeaChem's de-nitrate, but it doesn't seem to be working. I
guess the problem is the amount of flow thru the canister, but I have a
shut-off valve and no amount of tinkering seems to be doing the job. I
had the idea to recycle my Tap Water purifier and put the de-nitrate in
there. The small size of the hose should keep the flow down. The only
thing is how to hook it up in the system - how to get water to flow thru
and only get the right amount. Anyway, it's just an idea.
