Rams aren't cichlids to start up with. They're very delicate.
Cacatuoides are tough enough, beautiful and interesting. Guess where my
vote is.
Most 3 to 5cm characins can go in with cacatuoides, although territorial
fish (emperor tetras) should be avoided. Most West African Epiplatys and
Chromaphyosemion killies are also good in with apistos. Always have a
top, as Apistos will sometimes attack from below, and their companions
may be inspired to jump.
Right now, I have the cacatuoides-like cf. juruensis spawning in with N.
beckfordi pencils. It's a good combination. I have rummy noses (H.
bleheri) and cardinals in with egg guarding njisseni, and West African
lampeyes in with brood-gaurding cf. gibbiceps. All are working out - no
one's getting killed.
