Here are the minutes
from our last (November 2002) board meeting - Still not published as
promptly as I would like, but a full week earlier than last month so I
guess it's a slight improvement. You'll notice that some of the
information is "Old News" -- specifically the January meeting, which was totally
changed the next day; but, for the most part, the minutes reflect the
information that we had available at the time of the board
meeting.
Also, I'd like to
point out a couple of helpful hints. Of course, I'd rather that each and
every board member would SCOUR every line and become as intimately familiar with
the minutes as I am, but I realize that's probably not going to happen.
You may have noticed that I usually each topic and each Board
Member's Name to help you scan for the parts that affect you most. Please
pay specific attention to the section on our December meeting. I may have
missed it, but I don't have anybody as being responsible to actually buy the
prizes at Kevin's store and get them to the meeting. Did Kevin agree to
bring them?
Please let me know
of any comments or corrections as soon as possible.
Thanks,
Rick

(*) – Tentative, Special Dates (**) – Mike Schadle is a possibility, but he has typically cancelled in the past due to work responsibilities. The Board has requested that the entire club-year meeting & program schedule be displayed prominently for review and discussion each month. Therefore, it will appear at this point in both the minutes and the agenda. The December General Meeting will be the annual Christmas party (discussed in detail later). Paul will confirm Rusty Wessel for the January meeting – coordinating with Julie at GPAS. The Board suggests to Paul that the March meeting be kept "local" or "low key". On the other hand, it would be nice to pre-arrange a high-profile speaker for the October time-frame – possibly Beverly Dixon. Kevin Foxen has volunteered to host Rusty, Ad, and/or Paul (Loiselle) as needed – including airport pickup/drop-off, staying in his home, shuttling around to Seattle attractions, coordinating meals, etc. These are functions that Kathy (and Erik) have typically done in the past. Kathy will provide a Task List (Job Description) based on her experience as Program Coordinator (or, Speaker Wrangler, as she likes to refer to it). This list will be of immediate help to Paul (as the new Program Coordinator), Clay (as President), and Rick (as part of the project to document the responsibilities of all Committee Chairs.)
Old Business
Email update from Erika: Since there's no actual meeting in December, and since I will have a lot of holiday commitments (including a week's vacation in Seattle for Christmas! Yay!) the next newsletter will be sent out to arrive the first week of January. (This isn't JUST a selfish move on my part - I know all the correspondents that I rely on will also be suffering from the holiday time crunch.) Aside from that, I don't really have much to report. Some of you may have noticed that the last newsletter was NOT center-stapled. This is because I went to three Kinkoses, and NONE of them had an extra-long stapler! Then I said "Oh forget it, I'll just buy my own." Went to Office Max and discovered that the extra-long stapler costs about $45. Yeek! "Well," I thought, "We don't really NEED center staples, I don't think..." Also, as Rick has pointed out, if you read the months on the covers of the last two newsletters, it appears that we've skipped a month. This is because the first issue (which I worked on in September, but sent out the first week of October) was mislabeled as "September." I decided it was better to bite the bullet and skip the next month (so that the issue which arrived at your house in November was actually labeled "November") while I could still write off the error along with all the other "first issue" problems. :)
We received quite a bit of very positive feedback from the membership about the recent Lighting Workshop. Email excerpt from June Olberding I don't know about others but I really liked and got lot out of the wiring demo. Already have plans to up grade more tanks. :-> This obsession never ends.
The Board discussed what other workshops might be possible in the future – a DIY Make-it-and-take-it CO2 generator, for example. Some members have expressed ideas to Clay about different possibilities including presentations by the members. He would like to encourage this as long as the Board can be assured that they will follow through reliably. Maybe several members could give smaller presentations in 20-minute slots.
Sounds good to me! (Erika)
Rick Rose writes: Hi Erika, As you may have noticed in the board meeting minutes that were published this morning, I presented my suggestion to publish the new members' names to the Board at our October meeting and it was very well received. I did pass along your reservations about "identity fraud", but we don't really see any harm in publishing only the names (and no other personal information). If somebody wanted to take on a new identity, they could just as easily make up a name. The format that the Board would like is very simple. Something like the following...
The Greater Seattle Aquarium Society would like to welcome the following new members! Rohm Gustavson Brian Gregory James Joyce Preston Cheung Chad Oftedal Kate Breimeyer Cary Wheeler Ben and Andrea Browning Meredith Crichton ... and the following new sponsor King's Discus in Seattle
The names above are the actual names that belong in the initial listing. These go back to last June and would catch us up to current. Thereafter, there would obviously not be as many in any one month. Thanks, Rick Rose, GSAS Historian/Promotions
