RE: Insurance
Bob,
I believe that even though we are a non-profit organization we can be held
liable for any damages that may be incurred while in session. Thus, the Board
is most likely individuals at risk. Because if GSAS is ever sued, usually the
non-profit entity will be sued, but, also the Board. This is why we were
looking at what we needed to do to insure the Board and all. Most non-profits
have some form of inurance to cover the Board and damages that may be
unforseen. I would suggest we call around to a couple of insurance agencies
and see what they have to say.
I know I am not on the Board....but, I am on the Board for another non-profit
group that has been around for some time and they have the Board insured for
just such situations.

Subject: Insurance
First, an update for all the non - board members on this list. We held the
board meeting last Thursday night at our proposed new meeting site, Weter
Hall on the SPU campus. All board members present found the facility to be
quite acceptable for GSAS meetings and agreed to pursue securing it for our
use. Two issues have yet to be worked out: One is the SPU insurance
requirement and the other is library cart storage.
Here's the final word from Judy Bruce at SPU regarding insurance; They
cannot attach us to their policy as a "rider" as was discussed earlier, but
they are willing to wave the insurance requirement and instead write a
clause into the rental contract disclaiming any and all liability on their
part. This seems reasonable to me, but it also points out that buying
liability insurance might be a very wise thing for GSAS to do. I have no idea
what the cost would be, or how much insurance we should buy,
or from what company. Maybe we are somewhat protected by being a non-profit
corporation? If anyone has any comments or ideas regarding this matter or
would be willing to do some investigating into it please let me know.
Judy will be out of the office until Thursday, March 25 and I will contact
her regarding cart storage at that time. Apparently we can't use the
dumbwaiter because of fire code requirements but most likely will be able
to use the radio station office.
Bob
