Hi Bob:
Are we officially a non-profit organization yet? I
was at the bank today, depositing a new member check from Celestia Mayasleca,
and got the good news that we can get free business checking. They made the
change last month. It would be free forever, especially for a non-profit
organization, but they need proof of our non-profitness.
Changing our account to business checking would
allow me to view our account over the internet, which would be a very good
thing, since I can see what checks have gone through. For example: Patricia
Pierce's check bounced for $53.00. I got the paperwork this past weekend. I
called the Pierce's on Monday; they spent too much money on their trip to
Greece. I redeposited the check today, but I wouldn't have any idea if it went
through or not, unless I call or visit the bank. This seems a bit tedious
to me. The other alternative is to wait for the next checking statement to come
through, or the notice that the check bounced again, whichever is first. In this
fashion, I would be better prepared before our board meetings, and could tell
precisely what checks have been cashed and exactly what the balance is.
Another problem I ran into was that the account is
under my name in the personal account section. Then the clerk asks me if it is a
business we have. We I went to deposit the money from the most recent auction,
they had to go and verify it with another person with a more detailed report of
the account that shows GSAS. This same scenerio happened for the plant auction
too, and whenever I deposit anything without using the check deposit slips that
come with our checkbook.
If we update our account, we won't have the
headache we had last time at the bank, when installing a new
treasurer.
And, lastly, if our account is updated, then all
the board members (with the security code and account number), can view our
account activity, not just the treasurer!
Sincerely,
Susan Welenofsky - Treasurer
