Subject: [GSAS-board] GSAS Christmas potluck

Hi folks, sorry to say I am unable to make tomorrows meeting. I was planning on making the usual announcements for the Christmas  potluck, and collaborating with my buddy Trish on the party details but instead here is the potluck plans assuming last years plan is okay to repeat:

Date for the party: Tuesday December 14th-@7:30 pm.

Potluck style event-The club provides the main course-turkey/ham and a variety of beverages. And also all paper goods.  (Cheryl and Paul will take care of these.)

Sign up sheet should be passed around for potluck items-I would appreciate someone doing this for me. (Rick)

The gift exchange will be one of our sources of entertainment-everyone that would like to participate should bring an aquarium related mystery gift with a $15 limit, they will receive a number for the gift and members can take turns stealing gifts from each other.  (Rick will promote this via email list.)

I will contact Erik about bringing the Fish-O game again for additional entertainment- and I will be picking up about 6 prizes for that game. I know that Kevin is no longer at the Fish Gallery so if anyone has any other ideas on where I can procure gifts for prizes let me know-otherwise I will purchase the gifts and be reimbursed by the club.  (Bob will call to solicit prizes.)

Hopefully Tori has the kid's activities planned-if not maybe somebody can let me know if help is needed there.  (Bob will prepare a Kids’ Coloring Contest sheet.)

Thank you for your understanding, parties are being planned daily for me at my place of business and time is very sparse for me right now, however I will be at the GSAS Christmas party, of course, bringing with me all of the clubs provisions listed above-and then some!

Sincerely, Cheryl Winchester- (Your absent party planner)

o       Bob has reserved the commons area for December.

Subject: GSAS Membership Reminder

Hi Rick,

The GSAS Board of Directors has asked me to provide our members with a friendly reminder when it is time to renew their membership.  We hope that you find this service to be a helpful and useful tool in making sure that your membership in GSAS remains current.  If you’ve recently renewed, please disregard this reminder with our thanks.

Our goal is to ensure that you find your membership to be a very valuable and interesting aspect of your home aquarium hobby; and we are working hard to that end.  Your continued interest and support of GSAS is much appreciated.

Your Family membership recently expired on 11/1/2004.

There are two ways to renew.  You can simply pay your dues to Susan Welenofsky, our Membership Coordinator, at the next monthly meeting; or, if you would prefer, you can send your check (payable to GSAS) in the mail.

Susan’s mailing address is…

Susan Welenofsky, GSAS Membership

2973 142nd Place SE #6

Bellevue, WA 98007

IMPORTANT:  Please help us keep our address and other information up-to-date.  If you have moved, changed phone numbers, or gotten a new email address recently (and who hasn’t?) please include that information.  There are forms available at the meeting, or you can print out a membership form from our website:  just go to www.gsas.org and click on the link to the membership form.

Thank you, again, for all you do to make GSAS such a successful and rewarding experience for us all!

Kate said it would be fine for us to use her picture. Can we give her some kind of compensation for its use? It's a beautiful rendering.

Susan

v     It was decided that we will give Kate a free shirt to thank her for donating her artwork to the T-Shirt project.

The Board again discussed Susan’s proposal (above.)  It was decided that we will have the artwork aon the back of the shirt with the Latin name in small letters (Voted 3-to-1 in favor of adding the Latin Name.)  Then, on the front, in the pocket-area, we will have the logo along with the name of the club, in the font Nadianne in the four-line, gradually indented format that has become standard over the past three years – as shown below.

Greater

    Aquarium

      Society

If the cost would go up significantly to have the logo printed in its typical black and (whatever color that is?) then it could be printed in dark blue with white (no color) for the embedded letters GSAS.

It will not have the years, or “Since 1977,” or the website url.

Some shirts will be on white material and some on black with the color of the letters and logo adjusted accordingly.

Sizes will be mostly large and extra-large, with a limited quantity of small, medium, and XXL.

Okay, I found a much better deal in Ellensburg. Here it is. Kate requested a black shirt, as she would like something that would show stains. The black shirts require an extra color, making it a 5-color process, and the shirt itself is more expensive. So are XXL, XXXL t-shirts.

Rick,

Also, I know you have looked through our WWW sites. Did you happen to pick up on the hot link that we created for "affiliate" groups? Essentially it's a way for groups to place a link from their site to ours and sales that might be generated from the clicks on the link result in a 5% donation to the group. If the GSAS would be interested let me know.

Jim Atchison

The board is interested in participating as an affiliate.  We need to get input from Erik to see if he has any concerns.  Rick will ask Erik for feedback.

Ø       Susan proposed that we look into producing “Club Buttons” for events or as a possible fund raiser.  She brought an advertisement from a company called “Badge-A-Minit.”  Rick will request their catalog.  If we decide to pursue this idea, we might save money by simply purchasing the supplies from this company and using the machine that Rick’s church already owns to produce our buttons. – (Waiting on catalog delivery)

Ø      We should have a kids’ coloring contest at the December Christmas Party.

Ø      Bob will come up with a “Where’s Nemo?” or “Loach-o” patterned after the popular “Where’s Waldo?” game.

The text {of the membership reminder} sounds well. However, it just occurred to me that it will be much better if GSAS will have its own PO. Box address, instead of publishing, every time, different cashier's addresses. A small PO. Box costs about $60.00/year. It also looks more official.

Ø      Philanthropy Project

Bob,

This sounds interesting.  To consider sponsoring Thai I think the club should be provided with a proposal from Thai on exactly what it is he is trying to accomplish, the schedule of the project and the precise use of the money he is planning on spending.  He could present this to the Board I think, in 15 minutes or less.  Just some of the things I feel are needed.

This might be a worthwhile philanthropic opportunity. Thai sounds to me like a kid with a lot on the ball.
Bob

Hello, my name is Thai from the Bellevue International high school. As a senior at the school, I am required to do a senior project that requires me to explore and to go in depth on an educational subject. Being a fish enthusiast, I have decided to learn and explore more about ichthyology and fish keeping. I've chosen to write an essay on matter of "how does society ensure the well being of aquatic zones while at the same time ensuring the well being of the ornamental fish collectors who depend on their jobs for a living." Therefore, I was wondering if there were anyone who is  experienced and has extensive knowledge on the field, who I can possibly consult the subject with and someone who I can possibly rely on as a mentor. Secondly, one of the other goals for my project is to become involved with the community. I've chosen to teach an elemenatary school class about the fundamental science and art behind fish keeping. I wish to broaden their views about the aquatic world and show them that there is a lot more to fish keeping than just having gold fishes in a bowl. As a result, I plan on teaching an interactive learning class where students learn how set up a fresh water community fish tank and how to maintain and take care of it. To do so, I would have to raise enough money for the proper equipment and material (about 200-250$). I was wondering if the Greater Seattle Aquarium Society does any sponsoring and could possibly sponsor my project to make the project possible. My phone number is (425)861-7902 and my email adress is Thaichicken162004@yahoo.com. If anyone can help out, that would be awesome. I hope to hear back from you. Thank you.
                                                    Cincerely; Thai

Subject: [GSAS-board] Improving the Website

Hi guys,

Thought I'd drop a note on the off chance it gets intercepted before the board meeting.  I know I'm more or less out of the GSAS loop these days between all the AGA stuff, the ACA stuff, and more importantly, Dad stuff, so I wanted to offer the chance for you guys to help make the website better.  Rick's been periodically poking me with a stick when there are position changes, but I haven't been updating the meeting notices very well.  If someone is able to send me some copy for the website for meetings and such, I will be happy to put it up as quickly as possible (seems I'm not so likely to remember when it's on the flyer).  Also, if anyone has newer photographs to replace some of the now-outdated ones on the site (for instance, of a recent meeting at our new location), I'd be happy to add them.  That sort of thing.  And of COURSE, I am always open to someone taking over the webmaster job, but I figure you probably all have enough jobs to keep everyone busy, 'else someone would have probably asked me by now.

   - Erik

The board discussed Erik’s email and decided that Rick would make a better effort to keep Erik informed via email of changes and updates that need to be made.  Also, given Rick’s recent unemployment, he may look into learning how to create a website.  Steev offered to loan Rick a book that explains the basics in a very clear format.

Ø      Sandu - a presentation to introduce his idea for an “Aquascaping Award Program.”  Brief discussion highlights from last month’s meeting are as follows: - Moved to “Low Priority” items at Sandu’s request.  Sandu will prepare a short “blurb” for the January Newsletter.

o       Submissions/entries would be pictures

o       Entrants should have the option of being/providing their-own photographer or requesting that a “club photographer” (one person, to be determined) take the pictures.  This would alleviate the potential problem of “blaming” a non-winning entry on “which photographer was assigned to take their picture.”

o       The contest could accept entries during the entire club-year, culminating in a slide presentation at the June meeting, at which time the membership would judge the entries and vote for the winner(s).

o       Sandu will asked if there is enough interest in this idea at the last general meeting.

Ø      The “show of hands” of those interested in receiving an electronic version of the newsletter was positive at the December 2003 meeting.  June will continue to investigate on a low priority basis.

Ø      Sandu suggested the idea of establishing a “Sister Club” in some foreign country.  Bob is already in contact with Daryl Hutchins from Brisbane Australia.  An English-speaking country would be much preferred.  Bob will email to exchange newsletters first; then, if that works, he will propose the idea of a “Sister Club.”  Rick will send copies of the pamphlets to Bob. – Done.  Bob will continue correspondence re: “Sister Club” specifically to establish some common activities and a video exchange.

Next Board Meeting Location

The location of the next meeting will be at Sandu’s home.  The date will be Thursday, December 16, 2004, starting promptly at 6:30 pm.
