Hi Susan,

I have had some moderate success with Vallisneria in a hardwater tank 
several years ago, but have mostly cultured interesting algae on rocks 
since then (a good thing, IMHO..).  The usual rules about planted tanks 
apply, i.e., high light and CO2 will help.

There's a few pages in Christel Kasselmann's excellent book that talk 
about plants in Lakes Tanganyika and Malawi.  The former has a handful 
species known: Val. spiralis var. denseserrulata, Ceratophylum demersum 
(hornwort), Myriophyllum spicatum, and a couple of Potomogeton species.
