Susan,

I have kept Anubias nana and a couple other Anubias in my African tanks
for years.  They do very well.  I have also kept the various java fern
varieties and java moss with my Africans with no problems.  It all
depends on what Africans you have.  Tropheus will eat just about any
plant you have.  Your brichardi and calvus would do fine with just about
any hardy plants as they tend to leave the plants alone.  Your electras
will not bother the plants either, typically.  Same thing with
Aulonocara.  
If you were keeping Zebras or Tropheus I would stick to the varieties I
mention at the top of this note.  Otherwise, most hardy plants will do
reasonably well.  One of my faves is the Ruben Sword....

Oh dear! Not the eccentric "fish are prisoners" Dr. Ruhland! He is quite
a character. I am trading fish tank set-up for a session in his
hyperbolic oxygen tank from a space company in Russia. 

Erik, do you happen to know of any good hard water plants for an African
rift lake tank? I think vals and some apongeum (sp?) bulb plants are
okay. Have you had any personal experience growing plants in your
African tanks?
