Hi Bob,
We actually did that once or twice during my "reign". We called it "plant
and fish auction", picked up a LITTLE bit more donations, but it was still
basically the same plant auction (just with a side of fish).
One concern I might have with changing it to "livestock auction" is that
people think "FISH" not "plants". So it might actually turn away some of
the plantheads.
The other concern would be that if it WERE very succesful, it could be as
painful to run as the general auction! :)

At the board meeting last week this idea was kicked around: For the plant
auction in February, change the name from "Plant auction" to "Livestock
auction" and encourage hobbyists, members and non-members alike, to bring in
fish as well as plants for auction. Non-members would be obliged to join if
they wanted a split, of course, and we would still have livestock at the
general auction. We would still buy a big batch of plants from a wholesaler
for auction.
Here are some of the possible benefits that we could see as a result of
trying this:
-Hobbyists would most likely have access to some of the harder to find
fish,as well as plants (killies, livebearers, bettas, cichlids etc.)
-People raising fish would have another opportunity to sell or donate their
excess livestock.
-Publicizing the fact that the auction will include everything "live", not
just plants, might create more interest and draw in a more diverse crowd,
giving GSAS more exposure.
-The "livestock" portion of the items sold at the general auction would
decrease somewhat, cutting everyone a little slack at that time.
Anyway, feel free to comment; that's why we posted this. Right now it's just
an idea. I think it's a good one. probably a few bugs would have to be worked
out.
