Figured this is probably a better form for Shawn's message. FYI, there used to be a club called South Sound Aquarium Society! - Erik ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Thu, 19 May 2005 13:40:28 -0700 From: takehl <takehl@comcast.net> To: erik@thekrib.com Subject: south sound club Hi my name is Shawn Heifert. I live in Dupont, WA. If you are unfamiliar with that town, I'm not surprised. It is a fairly new development about halfway between Tacoma and Olympia. I am 27 years old and live here with my fiancée Theresa who is stationed at Ft. Lewis at Madigan Army Medical Center. I am relatively new to fish keeping and the aquarium hobby, however I feel that I have been educating myself extensively over the past three months since I started my African Cichlid tank. I was curious to know if there was a aquarium club in my area. From my online research I found that there was none, though I don't know if I exhausted all of my resources. This leads me into another issue, have you ever considered branching out into other chapters? I think the south sound area would be a great place to start. Since my beginning this hobby I have been working with a great local fish store in Lakewood called Aquarium Paradise ( www.aqauriumparadise.com ) They are a family owned and operated store carrying a wide supply of Fresh and Salt Water fish and supplies. I think they would make a great local resource for information and they have the contacts with major suppliers to spark possible lectures and demos. Now I of course haven't talked to them about this. This right now is all in theory. There is also three local fish stores in the Olympia area. I have visited one, Extreme Marine, that does reef setup workshops. I think they all could be worked into the mix either through workshops/clinics or at the very least a discount program. As a side note Aquarium Paradise has room at there store to even host meetings, just food for thought. I think a club in the south sound area would be a huge success. I know there are people out there in the same situation as I am, looking for a community of hobbyists that share the same love of fish keeping and aquariums with. In our hobby, the more knowledge you have will ensure that your experience is a happy one for you and a healthy one for your fish. And n!o other relationship can promote that education better than that of the one between yourself and people that have know-how and experience. A club in our area would facilitate the meeting of beginning hobbyists and experienced ones. All this without having to drive to Seattle to get it. I propose a South Sound Chapter of the Greater Seattle Aquarium Society. We would work in conjunction with the Seattle Club in format and purpose. All in all providing a closer resource for hobbyists in the south sound area. This is all very ambitious, I know. This, as I said before, is all in theory of course. But I was hoping that by talking with you I could get a better handle on what is out there or what we could help to create. Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you!
Sincerely, Shawn Heifert PS I attached a pic of my aquarium, let me know what you think!
