Re: [GSAS-board] Koi grow-out contest (3rd try)

Koi grow-out contest

All right Ladies and Gents, those of you with a competitive spirit and want a
new
challenge -- how about a Koi grow-out contest??? Steev Ward has generously
offered the
livestock for this contest -- Thanks a TON Steev!

The parameters:

-Start with "a bunch or so" of koi eggs or koi fry, your choice, obtainable
from Steev.
Eggs are available now if you want a head start, and fry will be available at
the
Picnic to anyone that wants to participate. You could even take just ONE egg
and see
what happens! You can use a bowl, or jar to start -- or just throw them in your
water
garden or Daphnia tub and see how that works.

-Start feeding.

-Grow said fish until October 14, 2008 -- our 2nd Tuesday General Meeting in
October.

-Present your results at the meeting! Four possible ways to win (three for
grownups and
one just for kids):

Open classes:
Biggest Fish -- biggest and healthiest looking fish wins
Best Group -- judged on size, color, number in group, health, etc.
Most Colorful Koi (sort of a luck of the draw on this one, but that's part of
the fun!)

Junior class:
Biggest Fish

Note to Juniors: Your fish also qualify for the Best Group and Most Colorful
Koi should
you choose to enter, but in these classes you will also be competing with the
grownups.

Entrants in the junior class will be asked at the meeting if they would present
their
fish themselves to the group and will be encouraged to say a little bit about
how they
did it (although this is not required to win). Any and all kids even remotely
attached
to the club are eligible (Jack, how about some of those grandkids??)

After the contest you can turn the fish back in to Steev if you want, or add
them to
your own collection, or sell them, or give them away as gifts, or find new ways
to
frustrate the neighborhood raccoons with them. Just enjoy them; that is all
that is
required.

Happy growing!
