Steev: Great notes! You make the evening sound scripted (or something). To update the flight schedule for Mr. Ghazanfar Ghori, the price has dropped to $339 (from $480). My card is yet to arrive so I can book myself so can I please borrow a GSAS card number? Over the phone is perhaps best. Any discount shoppers with a United code? -Paul On Fri, 28 Nov 2008, Steev Ward wrote:
Minutes of the Board Meeting on 11/25/08 At the home of Paul Wallace. (NEXT BOARD MEETING TO BE AT CHRISTINE'S ON DEC. 16TH) In attendance: Paul Wallace, Roy Slettvold, Christine Ranegger and Katerina Shih, Steev Ward, Susan Welenofsky, Dr. Margie Cashman, and Phil Lacefield Jr. (NOT Phillip A. Lacefield the convicted racketeer). Residents: Jennifer and Megan Wallace, watching Madagascar (the animated movie). Not in attendance: Meredith was not well enough to drive, but predicts that she will eventually recover. Cayle had a drawing class to attend (in color). Notes: by Steev Two types of pizza were served; cheese and pepperoni (with a rich fluffy crust), and herbs and bacon (very interesting and flavorful). Dr. Cashman brought a salad. Christine brought some rare and deliteful chocolate treats that may or may not be legal in this country. There were also some large and chocolate laden cookies. Paul started the meeting by giving us a run-down of the activities he witnessed at the AGA convention, showing us the pictures on his laptop. Not to be outdone, Phil also gave a presentation on HIS laptop, showing pictures from the Vancouver Aquatic Hobbyist Club. Phil and Cayle attended their auction on November 15th, and Phil volunteered to be their auctioneer. The VAHC was very pleased with the results. Phil said that about 250 people were in attendance, and 693 items were auctioned off. Phil related to us how the VAHC sold food and refreshments to keep the auction crowd intact. He also described to us the charity to which the auction proceeds were directed. This is an organization called Projecto PIABA, which promotes the sustainable harvest of fish by indigeous people of the Amazon and aids them in attaining their subsistence through means that are ecologically, socially, and environmentally sound (avoiding deforestation practices and involvement in the drug trade). Phil said that this is one cause with which we should definitely be involved. Members began a discussion of finances at this point, and mention was made of matters we might consider in making philanthropic actions. We asked about any current activities of our Philanthropy Committee, but none came to mind. While on the subject of club funds: Susan reported that we currently have $3199.64 in the bank. Some details still need to be addressed in making Christine the new active Treasurer of GSAS. She and Susan expect to complete that process by year's end. For the December 9 meeting we will have the potluck, Gift exchange (specifications to be included in the newsletter: around $15, fish-related, no live stuff), and Fish-O. Erik will provide Fish-O and Paul will supply Hex tank for prize. Other prizes will be determined on-the-fly. Notes on coming events in 2009: January meeting: Travel for Mr. Ghazanfar Ghori wil cost approx $500. Flight in leaving Washington, DC (IAD) 12:45 and Arriving SEA at 3:25 (United). Steev will pick up at airport and take to meeting and/or to meet with Erik Olson. Christine will take to airport on following morning if neccessary. Mr. Ghori will speak the the club on aquatic plants, mostly Cryptocorynes. Feb. meeting - Plant auction Some suggestions were made of plant types we might especially want. Paul and Erik will make plans to procure. March meeting - Lawrence Kent on his fish-collecting in Africa. April - General Auction on the 11th or the 18th. Need to determine exact location. May- Tom Murdoch, Director, Adopt-A-Stream Foundation. We will be making a contribution of $300. June- Perhaps Oliver Lucanus will be available. otherwise we will proceed with our usual auction/elections/ice cream social/swap meet and MAYBE another DVD of Erik's (like maybe that one of searching for the Flowerhorn that I was looking forward to?). We would like to have a Home Show again, but we have no one to head it up at this point. Steev and Roy said they would assist, and recommended that Connie be asked to help again. Other: Roy said that he received some HAP reports, from Dave Sanford. Steev asked for newsletter submissions to get to him as soon as possible since the meeting is on Dec. 9th. Everyone wished Meredith a speedy recovery. We went downstairs to view Paul's collection of 75 gallon tanks. We all left around 9:00 or so.
