Re: [GSAS-board] Proposed email

Hi Phil,

Is that is a "second" to my motion? If so, then we can request Meredith to
call a vote of the board members.

But I really do think that a one-time post IS EXACTLY what he's asking for.
He's not asking to hit the list every day with ads and specials; he's asking
for feedback on his website, and offering up a nice prize/payment for ideas
that help him out.

Were this one of our sponsors asking for access to the mailing list, in
order to send out direct-mail spam, I think you'd find Erik and I both
side-by-side standing guard over that crusty old Linux box with teeth bared,
weapons drawn and sweaty bandanas wrapped securely around our heads. Ain't
NOBODY gonna get access to the GSAS mailing list, not if *I* have anything
to say about it.

I'd say we let him do it with open arms, but with the caveat that he doesn't
make a habit of it, and that he sends any submission he'd like to post in
the future to the board for approval first. Again, I think this is fair and
reasonable, and I believe that if Jonas or Denny or anyone else wish to do
the same thing, we should first look at what they want to send, then
approve/decline accordingly.

Phil

Hi All,

When I signed up with GSAS and provided my e-mail address I did not
authorize the distribution of that address or the use of that address for
the dissemination of information other than our monthly newsletter. I was
told that my e-mail address was provided for access to the GSAS Member Chat
and for receipt of the electronic version of our newsletter, Northwest
Aquaria. I did not authorize its use for any other purpose. I do feel
strongly that using our e-mail address list in this manner would not be in
the best interest of the club.

I have not seen a monthly posting from Hiro (or for that matter seen Hiro at
a meeting) in quite some time. "Lowcoaster" did not put the posts on our
GSAS Member Chat, GSAS members did. Hiro's posts as well as the
"Lowcoaster" postings were done on our GSAS Member Chat, not as a
distribution to the e-mail addresses of all of our members.

I appreciate the fact that Dave wants to improve his website, and thus
increase his business. A compromise alternative might be to allow Dave to
put a "one-time" post on our GSAS Member Chat and request feedback on his
website (not to promote business or "specials")? That way our members do
not receive an unsolicited email from the club and Dave can receive feedback
from individuals that are interested in purchasing from online vendors.

Therefore, as a board member, I move that: "We allow Dave to do a "one-time
only" post to the GSAS Member Chat to solicit feedback on his website, not
to promote sales of any products or services." Do I hear a "second" from
the board?

Also, regardless of what Clay said about slippery slope, consider that
we've had things like "lowcoaster"'s plant list posted, as well as Hiro's
monthly postings of stuff for sale (not auction -- straight sale).

So, can we get an executive decision? Looking at the board members
opinions, it seems to be roughly "tied"...
