Re: [GSAS-board] Proposed email

Hi,

After having been in the club 13 years or so (much less than Erik, Steev, Clay and Dave), it seems like this stuff comes and goes.

I never minded Hiro's posts, it gave club members great opportunities, and I miss Hiro (does anyone know where he went), but it was bordering on commercial, and he was definitely local...right at Lake Union. Hiro was tactful.

I have seen some other posts border on commercial. In general, people on the list tend to ignore them or tell them how they feel (like...HEY STOP THAT).

This guys seemed very polite. Most people probably would of just done posted it. If he wasn't so *nice* he would of posted and no discussion would of ensued. I like the idea of saying, Hey...I am setting this up and trying this out, if anyone wants to offer suggestions, I would love to hear them, and his link. He can put the discount in his link or on the GSAS page. Done. He is a member.

GSAS members post things all the time about stores having sales, or look at this, or someone is opening that...and I like that. It lets us know where to look.

Now if it was regualar ADVERTISING on the LIST I would say NO WAY. But this isn't, he is just asking for some feedback.

Good luck discussing it at the board.

Kathy

I'm with Shango on both not being the board and thinking that a post
to the list requesting website feedback seems like something any other
member might do (whatever perks he might offer to whoever gives him
feedback can be between him and that person). I agree with Erik that
if he puts a discount message in his sig file that it would be no
different than any other sig file. If he wants to offer a continued
discount, why not just have him do whatever he needs to do to become
an official sponsor like other stores and list his discount however
those are listed on the website, in the newsletter, etc.

The problem seems to be that he tried to ask permission. I :-)

Indeed this is a complex topic with alot of folks with different opinions based on
different experience.  This is the main reason I think we should not open
Pandora's box.

I personally never had an issue with Hiro posting because he was int he club, donated stuff and
bred them himself.  However, I didn't care for Mark Dorward posting LowCoaster's stuff every
week.  That should be an opt in thing directly from the seller.  I also don't care for
Jeff's stocking lists of African fish.  There should be one email inviting people to get on
his personal list and then we shouldn't have to hear about it again,

There is nothing wrong with the fellow posting to the list saying that he is
launching a new website and would like feedback.  As soon as there is any kind
of discount or remuneration involved I think you have the slippery slope.

Honestly, I don't think any of this is a big deal but part of the role of the
Board, which I know I am not on, is to decrease future liability and so I think
we should be clear about our precedent and what it may mean.

Dear Shango & Board,

The yardstick I use is "local".  I am happy to get updates forwared from
Phil of the Renton store and have personally posted the reopening of the
Little Amazon and local sales.  I was even happy to anounce when Doran's
Fish Take People opened a store front down south.  The only problems I
remember have been Hiro (outright sale) and LowCoaster as they are not
local.  I agree that it we drop the bar to Internet, can ship, we will be
swamped.  So, IMHO the question is how local is this venture?  The angle of
become a major distributor, undercut local stores, does not last long.  This
is why Steve will not let us do a group buy from the cichlid exchange and
why breaders are really hesitent to sell locally.  On the otherhand there
are a number of placed that hunt for common items locally and sell nice
packages.  I am thinking driftwood from CA (It Grows On Trees!) and
regulators from Rex as he uses a group buy to get around $50 min order
restrictions.  So if the site stocks NW specific items with fast/cheap
shipping I am all for it.

On a side note, Jeff looks like he will be spamming his stocking lists for
African fish.  When does this become a problem?
