Re: [GSAS-board] "betta-test" presentation archive page

Hi all,

I think that until we are sure that the talks can only be accessed by GSAS
members we should not make that page available that has all of the talks.
The individuals that allowed us to record their presentations agreed that
only GSAS members should have access to their talks.

It's a weird balance. Go too far in one direction, and you end up with something that's going to tick off the speakers. Go in the other direction, it's unusable and/or unmaintainable. I've mainly been concerned that we don't have things EASILY found, i.e. linked from main pages or search engines. Right now you can find the torrents if you search the gsas-member archives.

If we're going to go that far as to say "ensure only members have access to the torrents", then maybe a better approach to this whole thing would be to have the URL linked and easily accessible, with a "members only" tag, and the directory (including all the .torrent files themselves) password protected.

Steev would mail out the password every month.

OK, proposal #2... play with these:

http://www.gsas.org/talks/ - Same index page, but password protected.

Here's one of the torrent files inside it:

http://www.gsas.org/talks/shrimpguys.torrent

In order to access any of it, index OR torrent, you need to log in with the username "gsas-member" and password "wombat".

Such a system would enable us to continue announcing torrents monthly, as well as link to the index (with a "members only" note... this piquing curiousity of non-members and perhaps picking up a few more in the process). Steev would send the password with the newsletter, and after I put up the torrent file, I can link to it in the member list, and say "use the username and password Steev mailed to you with your most recent newsletter."

I think this may work out much better in the long run. Heck, we could use the same protection + index file approach on the newsletter directory, couldn't we?
