Well, they could live in the one gallon for a bit.  Eventually you would 
probably want to put them into something a little bigger.  I keep a 
number of juveniles in a 2.5 gallon tank, or a trio of adults.  Lots 
depend on water quality.  If you are good about keeping the water 
quality up, then they could be in the 1 gallon tank through adult-hood.

I could always give you some smaller fish too, so that it would give you 
a bit more time to think about changing to a larger tank if you wish.

Let me know what you think.  If you still would like a pair or two, I 
can bag them up and bring them to the meeting on Tuesday.
